Drunk in Public by David J. Sperling
In Drunk in Public, Officer David Sperling chronicles the life
and arrests of Mark David Allen. Starting as a man with a drinking problem who’s down on his luck, Mark plans
to go to AA for help and to get his life back on track. With in a few hours Mark is drunk and back in jail. And
so it goes as we watch Mark’s life and addiction spiral out of control. From disappearing and reappearing in Hawaii
with no idea how he got there, to stealing clothes from a local laundromat and defecating on them, Mark is clearly in need
of help. And when the local law enforcement tries to get him help, psychologists let him go saying he’s able to
take care of himself. So Mark is back out on the streets and in a matter of hours, back in jail…ultimately the
only place he can call home.
Shot on a variety of formats, over a number of years, the film looks as rough as the subject, but does
not detract from it. Drunk in Public is an incredibly sad look
at the effects of alcoholism and the difficulties of helping a man who doesn’t want to change.
